The relationship between preventing back pain and sitting, standing, walking and lying
The daily activities of people are mainly sitting, standing, walking and lying. These activities have close relationship with the occurrence, development, relief and disappearance of back pain.
First, sitting, the correct sitting posture should keep the waist straight, hips backward, back at the back of chair, hands or forearms on the armrest. This can make lumbar vertebra bear even stress and muscle strength balanced, and protect the waist.
The bowed waist and slanted body are not the physiological status. It will cause back pain if you have no back pain; if you still have it, the pain will be aggravated. You must remember not to lean against the head of bed, bend your body, bow your waist and watch TV. Don’t sit on the bench or chair without armrest.
No matter what is your sitting posture and you sit on bench or chair, you should not sit for too long. The studies show when you sit, the enduring pressure of centrum is 15.3kg/cm2; When stand it is 9.6kg/cm2; When lie, it is 3.5kg/cm2,and this is the lightest endured pressure. Therefor, the backache patients should rest on bed to relieve the pressure on spine.
Second, standing, compared to sitting, the pressure that the spine should bear is obviously lighter when stand. But standing for too long time is still a cause of back pain. Standing needs the contraction of paravertebral muscle anterior to spine and trunk extensors posterior to spine to maintain balance, but the paravertebral muscle is easily to be fatigue. This caused the unbalanced muscle strength of front and back side of spine. Thereby the backache will aggravate.
Third, how about walking? The endured pressure on intervertebral disk is heavier when walking, compared to standing. But paravertebral muscle and trunk extensors can have transient rest, the lasting contraction of muscle is avoided, and muscle fatigue is put off.
Fourth, the muscle can relax when lying, and the pressure that the intervertebral disk endured is comparatively light. The backache patients should have more rest on bed. The best posture of lying is supine. Lay a pillow to make the knee bent. The pressure the intervertebral disk should endure in lateral position is 3 times larger than in supine position, but it still the endured pressure in this posture than in other postures.
People who have backache or ever have back pain should lie on bed to have more rest, less standing and sitting, and more walking.
