about stroke

Stroke, which is also called acute cerebrovascular attack, is the rapid function loss of brain due to the disturbance of the blood supply in the brain. The cause can be This can be due to ischemia by throbosis or embolism, or a hemorrhage. The damage of the brain will lead to the paralysis of the limbs, aphasia, or the disfunction of the eyes.

Stroke is an emergency in clinical medicine, and it can cause permenant damage of the nurves, complications, even death. In United States and European, it is the leading cause of adult disability. It is the second big cause of death throughout the world, and may soon become the first place cause of death. High blood pressure (hypertension), advanced age, TIA (transient ischemic attack) or previous stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking and atrial fibrillation, those are all the risk cause of stroke. And high blood pressure is the most important risk factor of stroke.

The World Health Organization in the 1970s made the definition of stroke as a “neurological deficit of cerebrovascular cause that persists beyond 24 hours or is interrupted by death within 24 hours”. This definition intended to show the reversibility of tissue damage and was devised for the purpose, with the time frame of 24 hours being chosen at random. The 24-hour limit distinguishes stroke from transient ischemic attack, which can be resolved within 24 hours. If the treatment is given at a early stage, the severity of stroke may be reduced. Nowadays numerous people prefer alternative concepts, such as brain attack and acute ischemic cerebrovascular syndrome, especially after heart attack and acute coronary syndrome respectively), which shows the  reflect the urgency of stroke symptoms and the need to act swiftly.

Sometimes stroke is treated with thrombolysis, most times with supportive care, such as speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Secondary prevention is usually applied with antiplatelet drugs, such as aspirin and often dipyridamole, blood pressure control, statins, and in some patients with carotid endarterectomy and anticoagulation.
